Name: Kate Dalton
Company: University of Liverpool Management School
Position: External Engagement Officer
What do you actually do day-to-day?
No two days in my role are the same, which is what makes it so rewarding. A large part of my time is spent building new connections and strengthening relationships, while showcasing how businesses can benefit from engaging with us. I regularly meet with organisations to understand their goals and explore opportunities to support their growth.
I also plan and deliver engaging events, such as Business Breakfasts, which showcase the school’s research and connect it with the business community. These events provide a platform for sharing insights, sparking collaboration and demonstrating the real-world impact of our work.
Alongside this, I spend time meeting with businesses face to face, ensuring they feel supported and get the most value from working with us.
What experiences or influences guided you toward your current profession?
I’ve worked at the University for 12 years, including 10 within the Management School, which has given me a strong understanding of both the institution and the value we can offer to businesses. Over that time, I’ve built up extensive knowledge of the school’s work, particularly its research and how it can support external partners.
I was naturally drawn to an external engagement role because it plays to my strengths. I’m very outgoing, I enjoy meeting new people and I’m able to build connections quickly and authentically. I find it really rewarding to bring people together and to act as a bridge between the University and the business community, helping organisations see the opportunities for collaboration and growth.
What’s the best advice you have ever received?
The best advice I’ve received is to simply be yourself. Being genuine helps you build trust and connect with people more naturally, which is so important in a role focused on relationships. When you’re authentic, conversations flow more easily and people are more likely to engage and work with you.
What does leadership mean to you?
For me, leadership is also about being approachable, authentic and proactive – qualities that help build strong networks and inspire confidence in others, regardless of job title.
What has been your favourite Professional Liverpool event and why? / If you are a new member, which event are you most looking forward to attending and why?
My favourite professional event so far has been the Black Book Brunch. It’s a really focused and effective networking event that goes beyond the usual format – it’s all about making meaningful connections and turning them into real opportunities.
What’s your favourite TV programme?
I’m not a big TV watcher, but if I had to pick a favourite, it would be The Sopranos. It’s one of those series that just sticks with you.
How do you relax?
Outside of work, I enjoy running and make time for it three times a week – it helps me stay focused and clear my head. I also love unwinding with a good glass of red wine.
Which do you prefer: sweets or chocolate? And what’s your favourite?
A very niche favourite – dark bounty (and can’t find them anywhere these days!)
Pub or club? Definitely pub.
Do you have any hobbies? With three young children, my main hobby is being a full-time cheerleader – whether that’s dance, football, or swimming!
Go to karaoke song? More of a spectator when it comes to karaoke!
Favourite venue in Liverpool? Boxpark is just brilliant as an event venue! Also the Reader in Calderstones Park.
