Two minutes with… Simon Mills

Company:  Langtons

Position: Corporate Finance Partner

What do you actually do day-to-day?

I work with business owners, shareholders, and management teams at key stages in their businesses journey.

Typically, that’s when people are thinking about selling, buying, funding a business, or planning what comes next. My role is to help make sense of the options, shape a clear strategy, and then guide and support clients through the process from start to finish.

I advise on areas including business sales and acquisitions, management buy‑outs, funding, and shareholder planning, acting as the lead adviser throughout. That means everything from early‑stage thinking and valuation, through negotiations and deal structuring, right through to completion of a transaction.

What matters most to me is being a trusted, straight‑talking adviser. Transactions can be complex, time‑consuming, and occasionally stressful, so I try to focus on keeping things clear, practical, and moving forward, working closely with lawyers, funders, and most importantly, my clients.

Have you ever had a mentor? If so, who?

I’ve worked with many people over the years that have help develop and guide me.  From my first boss when I was a paper boy to my colleagues at Langtons I’ve tried to emulate the best parts of people I respect.

Does money motivate you?

Freedom motivates me.  Money is a key part of being able to have freedom to do the things you want to do in your life – but you must enjoy what you do as well.

What has been the most important event in your working life?

Making the step into Corporate Finance when I joined Langtons is high up there.

I probably should also say meeting my wife when we were both at KPMG needs to be on the list as well.

Who do you most admire?

It’s hard to only pick one, there are so many people from over the years.  From my parents who helped me build strong work ethics, coaches who showed me the value of teamwork and colleagues over the years who have helped me develop technical and non-technical strengths.

What does leadership mean to you?

To me, leadership is about being a person people trust when things matter. It’s staying calm when others feel pressure and saying the honest thing rather than the easy one. It’s setting standards through actions and empowering people to make confident decisions and being there to support them. If people feel clearer, supported, and better for having worked with me, then I’m doing leadership the right way.

What’s your favourite TV programme?

I’d have to say Breaking Bad has been the best series I’ve ever watched.  Currently Landman is a favourite.

How do you relax?

Time spent with family or watching the mighty Reds (Manchester version).   Putting on the boots and gloves for a game with for Liverpool Ramblers is still relaxing, although less so in the day or two afterwards!

Fry up or healthy smoothie?

At a weekend it would be the Fry Up

Pub or club?

Pub

Gym or countryside walk?

Still the Pub but in this case after a nice countryside walk

Favourite piece of music?

I have a very wide range of music taste so it’s very hard to pick just one.  Guns and Roses, Queen and Oasis are regularly on playlists.

Flannels or Florence & Fred?

Smart and comfortable is my preference, less so labels.

Birkdale or Birkenhead?

I’d probably say Birkdale – I’m not based that close to either so no real preference, but the coastal walks in the area are lovely.
