Two Minutes With… Rob Young

Name: Rob Young

Company:  SB&P

Position: Partner

What do you actually do day-to-day? I meet with clients to discuss financial results, I advise on the implications of financial decisions, I field calls to chat through issues as they come up, I review ongoing work, I catch up with other professionals to stay abreast of what’s going on locally and on a wider scale. And I have, occasionally, been known to play a round of golf!

Have you ever had a mentor? If so, who? Whilst I have never had a formal mentor I have been very lucky to have a number of informal mentors both professional and personal. All of them have taught me new things and helped me to develop into the person I am now.

Does money motivate you? Not being short of money motivates me. Being able to support my family motivates me. Money for money’s sake not so much, I’m not an extravagant person.

What has been the most important event in your working life? I think it must be the recession of 2008, I was quite young and the impact and implications of this type of downturn has moulded how I try to help clients now. I am always aware that things, totally outside of our control, can change quickly.

Who do you most admire? I admire different people for different reasons. I admire my son’s resilience, I admire my daughter’s work ethic, I admired my dad’s determination to keep himself busy and I admire anyone who carries on with the sport they enjoy even when they aren’t as good as they had been.

What does leadership mean to you? Making decisions that are difficult, setting the example I want to see, not asking others to do things that I wouldn’t do myself. Taking responsibility.

What’s your favourite TV programme? Anything from the 1980’s or 1990’s – Airwolf, The Fall Guy, The Dukes of Hazard, The A Team …..

How do you relax? Sport – I play hockey with Liverpool Sefton, I run, I ride my bike, I coach my son’s rugby team and I have recently started playing padel too.

Fry up or healthy smoothie? Fry up every time

Pub or club? Pub, ideally with friends.

Gym or countryside walk? Countryside walk with my dog Teddy. I love exercise but outdoors really.

Favourite piece of music? Depends on my mood and the company. I did go and see Oasis recently and that was amazing but also U2, Stone Roses, Bryan Adams.

Flannels or Florence & Fred? Definitely Florence and Fred, I am not a clothes person.

Birkdale or Birkenhead? I was born and raised on the Wirral so it would have to be Birkenhead.
