Name: Becky Myers
Company: Homes England
Position: Senior Manager – Origination
What do you actually do day-to-day? Essentially, my main role is triaging enquiries that come via our portal and also carry out business development promoting the Home Building Fund assisting SME developers obtain funding to develop houses from a minimum of 5 homes. It is key to promote that Homes England also supports the smaller independent SME developers as well as the large house builders. I also get involved in really exciting Business Change projects including automation & processes.
Have you ever had a mentor? If so, who? Yes, Stacey Flor, a fantastic Interim Director of Loans at Homes England who is currently mentoring me. Having a strong leader to look up to is very inspiring.
Does money motivate you? It used to be motivated by money when I was younger, but now at the grand old age of 30 going on 31, I find being ‘rich’ in life is having a job that is enjoyable, having a roof over my head and loving friends and family surrounding me. Of course, everyone loves opening a birthday card and finding 20 quid falling out, money isn’t the be all and end all but it certainly does help.
What has been the most important event in your working life? Quite honestly switching from private sector to public sector, it has been a huge culture change but one I would struggle to switch back to the private sector. It feels amazing achieving housing targets which are truly making a difference to the public and SME developers.
Who do you most admire? My Nan & Grandpa, both 2nd World War veterans, my Grandpa was blown up in the war in Italy and managed to escape with only a broken jaw bone and a set of new dentures with some very modern tech surgery using his hip bone to fix his jaw. My Nan, a Land Army girl, after being evacuated to North Wales as a child. They were both extremely involved in my upbringing, I often recall wonderful days out at Chester Zoo, The Blue Planet Aquarium and Ness Gardens with them (usually surrounding tea and cake). Nothing was ever too much for them and every day was filled with positivity.
What does leadership mean to you? Without sounding too corny, leadership means a lot to me, you can make or break someone’s experience in the workplace. I think having a plan, taking on feedback and being firm but fair can get you far in life. Being a nice person whilst also getting the job done. Work hard, play hard!
