About

The Liverpool Society of Chartered Accountants is proud to be the oldest Society of Chartered Accountants in the country, having been formed in 1870. The Society celebrated its 150th Anniversary on 25 January 2020. It is also one of the four Founding Societies of the Institute of Chartered Accountants in England and Wales (ICAEW). Life Membership of the Society has been granted to just four Past Presidents, Mr Harmood Banner, Mr Arthur Green Mr John Anderson and Mr Ian Morris.      The Society dates back to a meeting of "14 gentlemen engaged in accountancy" called at the request of Messrs. H W Banner and A W Chalmers, and held on Tuesday, 25 January 1870 at 24 North John Street. It agreed a set of objectives including "the protection of the character, status and interests of the accountants of Liverpool and the promotion of honourable practice". The Society has followed those objectives ever since, and has been proud to provide three Presidents of the Institute, Mr John Harmood Banner in 1904, Mr Arthur Green in 1987 and Mr James Ian Morris 2005/06.   Following a re-organisation within the ICAEW in 2024, the Directors of the Society took the decision to apply to the Charity Commissioners and to refocus its aims and purpose.     It is hoped that approval will soon be granted under a new purpose.   The purpose of the Charity will be to support the advancement of the education of young people who live in the Area, study or intend to study in the Area and wish to have a career as a Chartered Accountant. This new Purpose builds upon the existing annual support that is given to the best student undertaking Accountancy or related finance courses at each of the Universities of Liverpool, Hope, Edge Hill, Chester, Bangor, Wrexham and LJMU.   The Society can justly claim that the ambitions of its founders have been retained and the Society will have a very clear Purpose in supporting the young people within their area who wish to develop a career as a Chartered Accountant.
