International Women’s Day- Sarah Walton, incoming Managing Partner, Weightmans

International Women’s Day (IWD) is more than a celebration – it’s a reminder of progress made and the work still to do. As the first female Managing Partner of Weightmans, and my appointment starting just weeks after IWD, I see it as a call to action. It’s about breaking barriers, creating opportunities and a culture that enables our people to develop and fulfil their potential, and ensuring that leadership reflects the talent and diversity of the people within our firm and sector.

For me, IWD is about visibility. It’s about ensuring that women – especially those juggling careers and family (I myself have a 10-year-old daughter) – see a path to leadership that is not only possible but actively supported. It’s about challenging outdated mindsets and making sure that leadership isn’t just about who’s the loudest in the room but who drives real impact.

But most importantly, IWD is a day to shift the conversation beyond internal polices and towards real change – equipping the next generation with the confidence, skills and networks to lead. Representation matters, but action matters more. If we’re serious about progress, we need to move beyond symbolic gestures and commit to structural changes – mentorship, sponsorship and accountability.

For me, IWD is not just about women – it’s about building a better, fairer and more ambitious future for everyone.
