Systemic safety failings of the construction industry was the conclusion of the Hackitt Report following the enquiry into the Grenfell Tower tragedy. The Building Safety Act 2022 enshrines the regulatory reform and building safety recommendations from the Hackitt Report. The Act was passed into law in England and Wales in April 2022 and becomes enforceable in October 2023.

The Act has far-reaching consequences on the construction industry placing new regulatory regimes for building safety and construction products, changes to the way Higher Risk Buildings are designed, and giving residents more power to hold the industry to account. The Act applies to both new and existing buildings.

The Institution of Structural Engineers have prepared some excellent resources which will help anyone involved in the construction industry make sense of the changes and the implications of the Act.
