Renowned Speke-based integrated retailer and financial services provider The Very Group has joined forces with Merseyside-based charity Nugent to support children and young people who have experienced care.

Following a record-breaking Christmas, where its retail sales grew by over 25%, The Very Group reached out to Nugent to supplement its community activities across the region with a new exciting collaboration with much beloved local charity, Nugent.

The Very Group is committed to supporting its local community and was aware of the brilliant work Nugent does to help children and young people who are vulnerable and at-risk in the charity’s care. As well as enriching Nugent’s facilities, special care packages containing beanbags, weighted blankets, character bedding, bathroom bundles, kitchen sets and electrical items have been gifted to young adults preparing to transition into independence.

Normandie Wragg, Nugent CEO commented: “Children leaving care are expected to become independent and self-sufficient much earlier than their non-care peers. Some children leaving care cope well, but many find the path to independence extremely challenging. The situation is even more precarious for care leavers transitioning into independence whilst in the midst of a pandemic.

“At Nugent, we are passionately committed to supporting the rights and needs of young people on their way to adulthood and independence. The Very Group’s kind support will enable Nugent to enrich the aid we can offer to care-experienced young adults and lay the foundations for longer-term approaches to building self-reliance.”

In recent weeks, The Very Group met with Nugent representatives at Nugent House School, near St Helen’s, to surprise a young person with the first of their ‘Very’ care packages.

Fay Purves, Nugent Fundraising Coordinator, commented, “To see the young person’s face when they were presented with a care package was a very special moment – there wasn’t a dry eye in sight. Even the two Nugent House School therapy goats, Cabro and Zeige, were caught up in the emotion. It was a very moving afternoon”

Ben Fletcher, The Very Group’s Chief Finance Officer, commented: “We are delighted to be able to support such an important and emotive cause - one which is close to many of our hearts! Here at The Very Group, we are committed to having a positive impact in our communities. We promote economic growth, support inclusion and develop opportunities. We’re pleased to be able to support this important cause.”
