The challenge for engineering education is to equ ip our graduates with the blend of knowledge\, skills\, attitudes and expe rience they will require to meet the demands of society in the 21st centur y and beyond.\n\n \n\nIn this inaugural lecture\, Matt will draw on his ow n experiences to explore the past\, present and future of engineering educ ation. He will consider what graduates need to know and be able to do\; th e evolution of learning and teaching\; and the role of universities in ens uring a sustainable future.\n\n \n\nMatt has a degree in Metallurgy &\; Materials Science from the University of Liverpool. In 1994 he was awarde d a PhD for his work developing the additive manufacture (3D printing) of metals. He then spent 10 years in university and industrial research: deve loping additive manufacturing technology and introducing it to European in dustry. In 2004 Matt changed his focus from engineering research to engine ering education\; working first for the Higher Education Academy and since 2007 as an academic in the School of Engineering at the University of Liv erpool.
