St Georges Hall: A History in time - Professor David Olusaga OB

Renowned British-Nigerian historian, broadcaster and film-maker Professor David Olusoga OBE will return to Liverpool to deliver the first in a new series of talks at St George’s Hall that reflect on the special place it plays in the city’s history and its future. The popular presenter, academic and author will present St Georges Hall – A History in Time on the evening of 20 March in the Great Hall.

The city is well-known to Professor Olusoga as a graduate of The University of Liverpool. He also captured hearts and minds with his acclaimed television series A House Through Time in 2018 which looked at the history of Liverpool through the occupants and owners of a house on Faulkner Street. In this new lecture, Professor Olusoga will explore the significant role St George’s Hall has played in shaping the city since it was opened in 1854.

It is exciting for us to host him at St George’s Hall to kick off our lecture series and I’m sure he will bring the story of our historic building and the people whose life it has touched to life in a captivating address.”

Professor Olusoga has presented a number of programmes for BBC 2, including Civilisations, Black and British: A Forgotten History (BBC 2), The World’s War (BBC 2), and the BAFTA winning Britain’s Forgotten Slave Owners (BBC 2). An award-winning author, he was awarded an OBE in the Queen’s New Year’s Honors List and has recently been appointed as a Professor of Public History at The University of Manchester. He also writes for The Guardian and is a columnist for The Observer and BBC History Magazine.

St George’s Hall is considered as one of the finest examples of a Neo-Classical buildings in the world and is an intrinsic part of Liverpool’s UNESCO World Heritage Site. A truly unique building it includes the stunning architecture of the Concert Room and the grandeur of The Great Hall alongside the 30,000 Minton tiles, one of the most spectacular surviving Victorian floors in the country.

A limited number of VIP tickets will include a meet and greet with Professor Olusoga prior to the event, a signed book and drink on arrival.

Proceeds of the event will go to St George’s Hall Charitable Trust which delivers education events for young people and maintains the Grade I listed building.
